THE STORY OF 90 MILES
Our story takes place in Havana, the heart of Cuba. 90 Miles follows Ofelia, a beautiful Afro-Latina who has turned to sex work in order to take care of her mother, Estela. After Ofelia spends the night with her regular client, John, an altercation occurs between them outside of the hotel. Ofelia’s ex-boyfriend, Manuel, intervenes, and the altercation is transformed into an incriminating situation for both Ofelia and Manuel. On the run from the National Revolutionary Police, Ofelia must decide whether to accompany Manuel in his attempt to flee the island or to stay and face the consequences.
THE IMPACT
90 Miles aims to tell a story that is often overlooked. Cuba is frequently characterized as a paradise that is frozen in time, but this film dives into the realities of Cuba. Corruption, sex work, and emigration are among the topics addressed in this film. According to Forbes, “The Florida Straits’ innocent-looking coral blue waters conceal numerous threats that have killed an estimated 70,000-80,000 people since 1961.” Not only is it difficult to leave the island, but living under the government’s control has forced many Cubans to resort to sex work in order to make ends meet. As stated in the article, “Profile of Cuban Women Involved in Sex Tourism—A Financial Perspective,” published in the Scientific Research website “sex tourism is the most benefitting industry for the locals as people in Cuba don’t receive adequate salaries due to which sex work has grown since the last decade with 200,000 sex tourists coming to Cuba each year."
90 Miles is an ambitious project for students to embark on. Our most ambitious challenges for the production are sourcing authentic locations in Los Angeles and Puerto Rico and shooting underwater. We need all the help we can get. Your donation will directly go towards ensuring the highest level of production quality for a story that deserves authenticity.
