Nerot Shel Shabbat

THE STORY

Nerot Shel Shabbat follows a young expecting Jewish couple, Rivkah and Chaim, who for the sake of their family, have to flee the Soviet Union on Shabbat, the holiest day of the week in Judaism. To reach Poland, they have gone through nearly impossible lengths including obtaining passports and exit visas. Terrified for their lives, they get on a train ride to a new country. Nevertheless, Rivkah stays true to her Jewish customs by lighting the Shabbat candles.

After the couple witnesses a horrific incident involving another Jewish mother and her son, they hold onto their faith, to invite a higher power, which only strengthens when they encounter a misfortune at the checkpoint.

THE IRON CURTAIN

Nerot Shel Shabbat is set in the Soviet Union in the late 1960s during the time of the Iron Curtain: a political, ideological, and militarized barrier that intended to seal off the border following World War II. Many Jewish people were faced with intense antisemitism, forcing families to flee in the quest for a better life. However, this same oppressive system made it nearly impossible for Jewish families to seek asylum without exit visas.

CHALLENGES WE FACE

Nerot Shel Shabbat is an ambitious project, so our production will need to overcome some obstacles in order to make this story come to life.

The main challenge surrounds our ability to ensure historical accuracy throughout the film. This means everything from the locations to the language has to be as accurate as we can make it. For that reason, our team is working closely casting director and dialect coach to ensure that our dialogue and language are both realistic and authentic to the time period. There are other economical challenges that, with your contribution, we will be able to overcome, such as obtaining a historically accurate location, props, costumes, and set dressings.

Nerot Shel Shabbat is an exciting project and our production is looking forward to making it happen with your help!
