Glodok, also known as Jakarta's Chinatown, is a historic neighborhood located in West Jakarta, Indonesia. It is renowned for its vibrant Chinese community, bustling markets, traditional Chinese architecture, and rich cultural heritage. However, in 1998, the Chinese-Indonesian community in Glodok went through one of the deadliest and most unforgettable events in Indonesia's history.
The Jakarta riots of 1998 were a series of violent incidents that took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, during the political upheaval and economic crisis of that year. Glodok, a prominent area with, a significant Chinese population, was directly affected by the riots. The riots were triggered by political tensions, including economic hardship, and rising prices. In the days that followed, the protests escalated into violent riots and looting, with Glodok being one of the areas heavily affected.
