OUR STORY

When an Elizabethan boy player loses his only access to gender euphoria, a choice arises: sink into despair, or awaken to beauty in an unexpected world.

Queerness, transness, and gender expression are all terms and frameworks we are familiar with today, but they did not exist until very recently. Even though these experiences have been present throughout human history, we have barely any record of them. In Elizabethan and Jacobean England, theatrical companies scouted young boys, often prepubescent, to play female roles, referred to as "Boy Players." For many of these boys, playing female roles was a temporary phase, ending with puberty. As their voices deepened and their bodies changed, they were often transitioned into male roles or left the world of Theatre. This shift was typically treated as a normal progression, even a rite of passage. However, for some of these performers, portraying a woman was more than just a role; it became a source of identity, expression, and liberation. They found something in female roles that resonated deeply with their internal sense of self. They experienced gender not as a rigid binary but as something performed, inhabited, and felt.

Director's note: Growing up as a queer female artist in rural Pennsylvania, it was dangerous for me to express my true self. It took years for me to confront my sexuality, and I a m still grappling with how to present myself when I go back home. I only find solace and safety under the cover of artistry, filmmaking, and acting. For hundreds of years, art and performance have served as a refuge for those who feel marginalized, a way to communicate the unspoken and craft identities that defy the limitations imposed by society. This film for me is not just about creation. It is a statement of survival, defiance, and the unrelenting pursuit of self-expression and peace. Please allow me to speak for so many in my community who never had a voice. With the growing political climate in the U.S., now more than ever, it is time we are heard.
