When a Mormon sister wife finds out about her life-threatening pregnancy, she is forced to leave her community and betray her values to save her own life.
Director's Purpose
This story is a culmination of religious trauma, the female experience, and a true story that happened to someone very close to me. In her early 30s my godmother had to choose between her own life and her child’s. Diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma, she was faced with a decision to either recieve the life saving care that she needed or attempt to carry the fetus to full term with risk of harming the baby.
Having another child at the time, this decision meant the future of her daughter and the entire life she built. If she never made the choice to abort that baby she would have never survived cancer. If she never survived cancer, I would have never met her. If I never met her, I would have never learned what it meant to be a performer, a friend, a mother, and a woman.
Later in life, as I grew up, I noticed the scrutiny she faced with people that I admired greatly. The people I trusted with my life shamed her for her decision. Those who claimed to be peaceful agents of the lord told her she made a mistake and whatever happened would have been God’s will. This is why I write this story. To create conversation and understanding with the ones we love. To help people understand that it isn’t about politics, but it’s about life saving healthcare and female autonomy.
Being a woman means fearing for your life and knowing you don’t have a full control. Being a woman means fighting for your voice to be heard and tuning out the pressures of hegemonic society. With this film I hope to show another perspective. The perspective of both the survivors and those who never got to tell their story.
