ASCE Steel Bridge Team

The California State University, Northridge (CSUN) ASCE Steel Bridge Team is a dedicated group of civil engineering students who apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. As part of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter, our team designs, fabricates, and constructs a scaled steel bridge to compete against universities from across the United States in the annual Student Steel Bridge Competition. 

The Steel Bridge Project provides students with invaluable hands-on experience that extends beyond the classroom. Team members develop technical and professional skills in structural analysis and design, fabrication, construction planning, project management, budgeting, communication, and teamwork. Through this experience, students gain practical knowledge and confidence that prepare them for successful careers in the engineering industry while representing CSUN at the regional and national levels.

Our team competes in the Pacific Southwest Symposium (PSWS), a regional competition featuring universities from Southern California and Hawaii. The top two teams earn the opportunity to advance to the Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) National Finals, where they compete against the best collegiate steel bridge teams from across the United States.

The competition challenges students to design, fabricate, and construct a steel bridge that satisfies rigorous engineering specifications while maximizing overall performance. Teams are evaluated across seven categories: Construction Speed, Stiffness (Bridge Deflection), Structural Efficiency, Lightness (Bridge Weight), Economy, Aesthetics, and Cost Estimation. Success requires balancing technical design, fabrication quality, construction strategy, and teamwork to produce a bridge that excels in all aspects of the competition.

The Steel Bridge Team relies on sponsor support to help fund materials, tools, travel, lodging, and competition expenses. Our students devote countless hours—often late into the evening—to designing, fabricating, and testing the bridge, gaining invaluable hands-on experience beyond the classroom. Your partnership directly supports their professional growth and helps prepare the next generation of engineers.
