"Her"story | History of Alpha Sigma Theta
Alpha Sigma Theta started out with four women and is now a strong organization consisting of many members, memories, and traditions. Over the years, the sisters have added many things to the sorority that have made it the successful organization that it is today. AST was established to give young individuals the opportunity to develop their leadership skills to their fullest potential and to develop sibling hood, spirit, and enrich their college experiences. Through this, the siblings can better prepare for the future.
The highlight of the Fall 1987 was when a group of women wanted to become sisters of the new sorority. The idea of founding a mainstreamed sorority appealed to them. Several weeks passed and the women’s motivation for establishing a sorority increased. To publicize their goal, the women got together and designed T-shirts and wore the T-shirts on a certain day, Wednesday, May 13, 1987. People
on campus started to take notice, and out of curiosity, asked them why. This provided opportunities to explain their goal, and it quickly spread word around campus.
What Your Donation is For
For years, our chapter has been a home away from home for many members, fostering leadership, lifelong siblinghood, and service on our campus and within local communities.
Your generous donations directly support:
- Philanthropy efforts:
- Our chapter isn't just about fundraising, it’s about direct action. Donations to our philanthropy fund allow our chapter to actively serve our Deaf communities' organizations through charitable giving.
- Chapter initiatives:
- Contributions allocated toward our chapter initiatives ensure we can host meaningful campus events, connect with our community through public events, and preserve cherished Alpha Sigma Theta traditions.
- Supporting our members:
- Dues and expenses can create significant financial hurdles for our siblings as students. Your contributions help provide accessible resources to our members in need, and that regardless of financial background we all have access to the full sorority experience.

Thank you for standing behind our siblinghood, your support means everything to us!
