Who IS Jishin Taiko?

CSUN's Jishin Taiko Ensemble is a community-oriented traditional drumming ensemble group that aims to enhance the San Fernando Valley and beyond through enrichment, entertainment and education. Beginning as a part of the Nikkei Student Association a year after the 1994 Northridge earthquake and officially a CSUN student-lead organization since 2005, Jishin takes its name after a Japanese phrase "地震", which holds the double meaning: "earthquake" and "self-confidence." In its effort to form an interpersonal social connection with both the CSUN community and Japanese-American community, Jishin has collaborated with the CSUN Opera, CSUN Youth Symphony, and various local intercollegiate taiko groups in California, as well as playing in numerous performances and school assemblies both on and off campus. Additionally, Jishin is informally associated with Yansa Daiko, a taiko group affiliated with Tokiwa University, CSUN's international exchange partner school in Ibaraki prefecture in Japan.

Jishin's membership has declined since 2020 due to COVID-19, however through unconventional practice days and immense dedication, we have persevered and returned to in-person practices with a new found enthusiasm for the future of Jishin Taiko!   Concerts, performances, and gigs has been made possible by this resurgence, with returning songs that have not been played since 2018 such as Arashi, Dokokara, and Korekara!

Spring Concert 2025

Jishin Taiko is a student-lead Japanese drumming ensemble that was founded in 1995, a year after the Northridge Earthquake. The 24-25 season marks the 30th Anniversary since its founding!   The mission of Jishin Taiko, has always been to bring the community together, especially after devastating circumstances.

To celebrate, we plan to have a community-themed concert that will involve other cultural clubs on campus (Filipino American Student Association, FASA and Vietnamese Student Association, VSA) and special guests from local collegiate taiko groups. We want to incorporate as many members of the surrounding community as possible and give them, as well as you, the opportunity to celebrate with us on a stage like the Aratani Theatre! 

This project takes vast amounts of resources and labor to do, but we love for it to come to fruition! We greatly appreciate your donation to our fundraising page. Our goal is to have our 2025 Spring Concert on the Aratani Theatre to celebrate Jishin's 30th Anniversary! We can't reach this goal without you!   

Your donations will be used in the following:

Venue Rental: Primarily covers the cost of renting the Aratani Theatre Stage!
Additional Production Costs: Covers the costs of production assistants and technicians!
Collaborations: Covers artist fees and travel expenses for collaborative performances involving multiple student organizations, local Taiko groups, and participation from Jishin alumni!
Taiko Drums: Rental of additional Taiko drums for our performance!
Catering: Provides meals to our members during tightly scheduled stage rehearsals!
Transportation: Car/truck rentals to transport our drums and individuals to the theatre!
Filming & Photoshoots: Support our photographers and videographers!
